Arado River and Rajada Waterfall

Vilar da Veiga, Terras de Bouro

The Arado River flows down a deeply enclosed course and in a series of steps, forming numerous waterfalls and small lagoons. The amount of water it carries depends very much on the amount and frequency of rainfall, displaying, in periods of heavy rainfall, an extraordinary erosive force, as the granite blocks deposited along the valley sides and in the riverbed itself testify.

Although extremely rocky, in this part of the Arado River valley there is an interesting diversity of plant species, including plants characteristic of a Mediterranean climate. On the other hand, the presence of olive trees (planted) in this seemingly inhospitable place shows that over generations the local communities have been able to expertly make use of such areas.
